How To Remove Images In Shopify

As you build your Shopify store, you may upload files you no longer need. Keeping your workspace clean and organized will set you up for long-term success. Removing unused or outdated images before going live can also help speed up your site, so you will want to delete images you no longer use.

It’s important to note that there are two types of images in Shopify:

  1. Images uploaded in Shopify when building your customer-facing website
  2. Images for products and product variants

The first part of this tutorial will cover how to delete files or images for your Shopify store. If you want to delete Shopify product or product variant images, click here to skip ahead.

How to Delete Images from Shopify

Follow these easy steps to delete images from your Shopify store.

Step 1 – Access Settings from Your Shopify Dashboard

Access Settings from your Shopify dashboard.

From your Shopify dashboard, click on Settings in the bottom left corner.

Step 2 – Access the File Manager

Select the File Manager.

Select the Files option in the left panel menu.

You should now see a complete list of the images for your Shopify store. Remember, this list includes images uploaded in the theme settings area, background images, images uploaded to pages, and images inserted into blog articles. It does not include product or product variant images.

Step 3 – Select the Images You Want to Delete

Select the images you want to delete.

You can delete specific images by checking the box next to each image you want to delete. If you want to start fresh and delete all images, check the box above the first image to select all images.

This page also shows you the file type and size of each image. If you’re trying to improve your page load speed, I recommend looking for images with especially large file sizes and replacing them with smaller images.

It may be helpful to keep a tally on scrap paper of the total number of images you are preparing to delete. You’ll understand why in the next step.

WARNING: You cannot recover deleted images from Shopify so double-check your selections before moving on to the next step. Also, if you remove images that are currently active on your website, there will be a blank space in its place.

Step 4 – Confirm the Images You Want to Delete

Confirm the images you want to delete.

In the confirmation popup, you will see a total count of the files and images flagged for deletion. Make sure the number lines up with your tally from the previous section.

Click the red Delete button to delete the selected images.

How to Delete Product or Variant Images from Shopify

Compared to the above method, deleting a product, collection, or variant image is much more intuitive.

Step 1 – Open the Product

Select the Shopify product you want to delete images from.

From your Shopify dashboard, click on Products in the left panel menu. Using the filter or search bar, find and open the product with the image you want to delete.

Step 2 – Find the Product Media Section

Find the product media section.

Scroll about halfway down the page to find the Media section. Click on the image you want to delete.

Step 3 – Click the Trash Can Icon

Click the trash can icon.

In the top right corner of the fullscreen product media display, click the gray trash can icon.

Step 4 – Confirm Deletion

Confirm you want to delete the Shopify product image.

If you’re sure you want to delete this image, click the red Delete file button. Remember, this cannot be undone, so be sure you are deleting the correct image.
