If you’re using Shopify’s e-commerce software, then you’ve probably seen the ‘Powered by Shopify’ text somewhere on the footer of your website. This label will tell your website visitors that Shopify is your e-commerce platform, and for the most part, you probably don’t mind having it.
However, some business owners feel it reflects poorly on their brand or doesn’t appeal to them aesthetically. Thankfully, there are several ways to easily remove the “Powered by Shopify” hyperlink at the bottom of your Shopify store if the time comes you find it not any more appealing.
You can complete everything in minutes by following the steps outlined below. Let’s take a look!
Table of Contents
Where Does the ‘Powered by Shopify’ Label Appear?
By default, the ‘Powered by Shopify’ text is displayed in two places. You will see the text at the bottom of your password page before your site goes live. Once you publish your site, the text will appear in the footer. If you’re not going to use Shopify’s branding, it’s best to remove it from your store as soon as possible.
Ways to Remove the ‘Powered by Shopify’ Label
Here are 3 different methods to remove the ‘Powered by Shopify’ from your store. Depending on the theme you have installed and version of Shopify some of all of these may or may not work. Method 1 is the most reliable and easiest to accomplish.
Method 1: Replacing ‘Powered by Shopify’ in Language Settings
This process would be similar to the one outlined above. The only exception is replacing the words ‘Powered by Shopify’ with your own tagline or some other text. Here’s how to do it:
- Click on Online Store in the left-side navigation of your admin panel.
- On Your Current Theme section, Click the “Actions” Dropdown.
- Select “Edit languages.”
- Search for Powered (the form will update)
- Under the link section, you can replace it with what you please, and if your site is password protected, the field below will update the password page.
Method 2: Removing the Text from the Footer
Every time you visit your e-commerce store, you’ll immediately see the text ‘Powered by Shopify’ in your footer. It’s simple to remove the Standard Footer or have something else appear in its place. Here’s how to get started:
- Click on Online Store in the left-side navigation of your admin panel.
- On Your Current Theme section, Click the “Actions” Dropdown.
- Select “Edit Code.”
- The left side column will display the theme files. Search for “footer.liquid”
- Using the Find Command (Ctrl + F or Command + F) search for “powered_by_link”
- NOTE: if you can’t find the specific line of code in the footer.liquid file, check the theme.liquid file
- Remove or replace everything including the opening curly braces “{{” and the closing curly braces “}}”
If you scroll down to the footer, you should see a message that says ‘Powered by Shopify’ is either gone or has been replaced.
Method 3: Removing the Text from the Password Page
The ‘Powered by Shopify’ text serves as a visual cue to visitors that your site is hosted on Shopify. Additionally, it allows visitors to provide feedback and leave comments on your site. But when changing the look of your password page, you might want to remove this message temporarily. Here are some easy steps to get rid of it:
- Log in to your store.
- Click on ‘Setup,’ then ‘Preferences.’
- A list of options should appear on the left side of the screen. Choose ‘Password.’
- Click on ‘Show Password Page.’
- Scroll down and look for the text ‘Powered by Shopify’ and change it to anything else you would like.
After you’ve made the above changes, click on the ‘Save’ button. You will be directed to the login page when you click on this. Now that you’ve saved your changes click on ‘Log In’ to verify that it works.
Benefits of Removing ‘Powered by Shopify’
Every client’s experience depends mainly on the product. Because of this, your products need to be presented in the best light possible. No matter what little text you remove, creating a striking first impression every time someone visits your site is essential. So having a blank space ensures that customers will only associate your business with your brand.
Once you’ve finished creating your Shopify storefront and stocked it with the best products, it would be a waste to let the “Powered by Shopify” be seen on your store. It looks unprofessional and detracts from all your hard work to make your product page look perfect.
So how exactly will your business benefit from removing the ‘Powered by Shopify’ tag?
- Your clientele and name recognition could go up, along with sales and revenue!
- You can utilize the footer to promote your own brand, thus helping your store appear more genuine as a brand.
- Aesthetically, the footer looks better without it.
What to Put in the Footer Instead of Powered by Shopify?
So now that you’ve already known how to remove the ‘Powered by Shopify’ tag, your next question would most likely be: what text should you use instead?
Your best alternative is adding trust badges such as Safe Checkout Badges, Accepted Payment Badges, Trust Badges from Third Party Companies, and Money Back Guarantee Badges.
Safe Checkout Badges
Displaying this trust badge assures your website’s customers that their information is secure and encrypted and that their identities are protected.
Accepted Payment Badges
You give shoppers confidence when you display payment badges from well-known brands such as Mastercard, Visa, American Express, or PayPal.
Trust Badges from Third-Party Companies
Through third-party endorsements, you can demonstrate your credibility to your customers. Trust badges can be obtained through programs like Better Business Bureau, Google Trusted Store, or VeriSign. They can be free, one-time payments, or subscription-based.
Money Back Guarantee Badges
This badge removes the fear and perceived risk of purchasing online, one of the most significant factors in conversion rate issues. Unlike the SSL and safe checkout badges, this trust badge does not address website security. Still, it assures customers that you are a trustworthy company.
Final Thoughts
The Shopify platform is one of the best e-commerce platforms. We all like it, but it might not be the best idea to mention that our stores are built with Shopify. Fortunately, removing the “Powered by Shopify” message does not affect any of the platform’s benefits. Whatever you decide, your e-commerce site has everything it needs to succeed.
